THE FOETUS

Blank faces, back spaces,
going back to the beginning
and even beyond
the moment of conception.

Beyond the knowing
of form or line
or recognition
of the order of things -
no light here,
or fear.

No familiar shapes either
but somehow the sounds of comfort
like a suckling breast
filtering down through the veils
of the universe.

Inwardly I see
the hand of the Creator
lifted high
and poised
in commanding,
that soon I should commence
the race of life.
