Funny how you put the boot in
to your own countrymen
when they came out of the jungle
exhausted and battle weary -
and wanting a bit of fun.

Bright lights and a can of beer
and mateship in the sleazy halls,
the odd good-natured rip it up
let off steam and drunken brawl.

It always took four of you
in your eye-hiding red caps,
to subdue a man
who’d just been to hell
and back.
